Scouts
Brownie Girl Scouts "Try-Its" Workshop
The Historic Carnton Plantation Museum is a great place to learn and to earn your girl scout Try-Its and Badges! Choose one or three of our Brownie Workshops and earn your badge. For more information contact Tara Danley at 794-0903 or tara@battleoffranklintrust.org.
1) “Write Away”
We will cover Try-Its:
* All about Me: We will examine an authentic “autograph book” that belonged to Hattie McGavock who grew up at Carnton. She and her friends would fill out pages that were all about their likes and dislikes and we will do the same! Once everyone fills out her “all about me” form we will combine the information into a troop autograph book!
* Read the Story of Someone Special: We will have a short reading and discussion of the life and story of a real person who lived during the Civil War Era.
· Group Giggles: Children who lived during the mid-1800s didn’t have television and video games to amuse themselves so often they would tell stories. We will practice the art of storytelling with each girl having an opportunity to contribute to the story!
· Write a Letter: Scouts will have an opportunity to give their try at writing a letter with a quill pen and ink.
2) “Manners”
We will cover Try-Its:
Respect for Others: Part of the Girl Scout Law states, “I will do my best to respect myself and others.” We will discuss how manners relate to respect and then create a skit that demonstrates this.
* Meeting People: Girls will learn how to make proper introductions of themselves and others.
· Table Manners: Proper table manners are a must for a young lady. We will discuss proper table manners and place settings of today and the mid-1800s.
· Hosting a Party: We will put our good manners to use and have a small “tea party” with a drink and snack!
3) “Listening to the Past”
We will cover Try-Its:
· If These Buildings Could Talk: We will take a short tour of some of Carnton’s historic buildings and learn some interesting facts.
· Visit the Old Cemetery: Scouts will visit the McGavock Cemetery on the property and discuss dates, symbols, and names on the gravestones as well as make drawings of the stones.
· Tell Stories of the Past: We will read two stories about the past and then tell them to another group.
· Games of the Past: We have fun learning an old-fashioned game from the Civil War days.
Must have a minimum of 7 Scouts at $10 per workshop or $70 minimum. A Carnton Plantation patch is included for each girl!

“Folk Arts” We will cover Try-Its:
1) Family Portrait: We will look at family photos and learn about photography during the Civil War era. Then each girl will drawa picture of themselves or family as an artist might have done during the 1860s.
2) A Picture Tells a Thousand Thoughts: Looking at old photos, we will discussthe poses, clothes, facial expressions, and backgrounds in these photos. Based on our discussion, we will create stories around actual old photos using what is seen in the photo as clues that will piece the story together!
3) Traditional Art: The girls will create their own traditional craft inspired by the 1860s.
4) What Toys Tell Us: In the “Girl’s Room”, scouts see examples of old toys and learn what the toys of the past were designed to teach.
5) A Feast of Folk Crafts: Some craft projects are a big undertaking! Each scout will design their own quilt square which can later be put together to make a troop quilt.
6) Time Travel: During a mini tour of the historic 1826 house, the girls see and discuss examples of folk arts of the past such as portraits, photos, and musical instruments.
NOTE: Must have a minimum of 7 Scouts at $12 per workshop or $84 minimum.
